RM9.46 million approved for 52 flood mitigation projects in Sarawak

MIRI:The federal government, through the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), has approved RM9.46 million for the implementation of 52 Projek Cakna MADANI in Sarawak, aimed at strengthening flood mitigation efforts across the state.

According to a statement today, the allocation falls under Rolling Plan 1 (RP1) of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) for 2026, and covers projects described as “low hanging fruits” expected to bring immediate benefits to the people of Sarawak.

Of the 52 projects, 12 have been completed, 13 are currently under implementation, while 27 remain at the pre-implementation stage.

Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof, visited one of the projects, that is the riverbank stabilisation works at the Tab Cinaq Cemetery in Miri.

The project, valued at RM134,682, began in May 2026 and is expected to be fully completed by November 2026.

The scope of works includes the construction of a 50-metre gabion wall to stabilise the riverbank, reduce erosion, and protect infrastructure and the cemetery area from the risk of bank collapse.

During the same visit today, Fadillah was also briefed on and inspected progress of the Miri River Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB), a project with an overall cost of RM31 million.

Physical works on the project began in October 2023, and overall progress has reached 58.11 per cent to date, with full completion targeted for November 2026.

The scope of the RTB Sungai Miri project covers consultancy services, preliminary works, utility relocation, and the construction of flood mitigation components such as a tide wall, retention pond, upgraded drainage systems, a pump house, flood control gates and a trash trap system, in addition to the installation of mechanical and electrical systems and project management.

Overall, PETRA has approved various flood mitigation projects in Sarawak with a total cost of RM3.834 billion, covering 29 projects across the state.

The federal government said in the statement that it remains committed to strengthening the nation’s resilience against flood risk through high-impact projects that directly benefit the people, in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI, which prioritises sustainability, wellbeing and effective service delivery.
