LUNDU: The growing volume of solid waste each year requires serious attention, as poor waste management not only pollutes the environment but also places increasing pressure on landfill systems and poses risks to public health.

Opar assemblyman, Billy Sujang, said efforts to promote waste reduction, recycling and waste segregation at source must be further strengthened to ensure long-term environmental sustainability.

“Major change begins with small actions. Good cleanliness practices should start at home, in offices, coffee shops, inside our vehicles and wherever we are,” he said when officiating at the closing ceremony of the Zero Waste Village Campaign 2026 4.0 at Lundu Town Square on Saturday.

Billy also stressed the importance of embracing the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (3R) concept in daily life by encouraging communities to repurpose or recycle materials such as bottles, cans, tyres and other used items instead of discarding them.

He added that continuous efforts to combat Aedes mosquitoes remain crucial, as the threat of dengue fever persists, particularly in areas where stagnant water provides breeding grounds.

According to him, discarded cans, bottles, coconut shells, used tyres, flower pots and poorly maintained drains can all become breeding sites for Aedes mosquitoes if water is allowed to accumulate.

“If we eliminate these breeding grounds, we can significantly reduce the risk of dengue transmission,” he said.
