BELAGA: Infrastructure development in Sarawak’s interior will continue to be strengthened through the expanding road networks, electricity supply and other essential amenities to improve the rural communities’ quality of life.

Deputy Minister of Digital, Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, said improving basic infrastructure remains a priority to ensure residents in remote areas enjoy better living standards while keeping pace with the state’s development.

He asserted that alongside infrastructure improvements, the state government is also committed to ensuring rural communities have access to quality healthcare and digital connectivity, which are key pillars in building resilient, inclusive and competitive communities.

“As Deputy Minister of Digital, the ministry will continue expanding internet coverage, strengthening digital infrastructure and enhancing digital literacy programmes to ensure rural communities are not left behind in the state’s digital transformation.

“Digital technology should be embraced by all segments of society to improve livelihoods, create economic opportunities and make daily life more convenient,” he said during the closing of the Community Well-being Carnival organised by the Ministry of Health Malaysia Training Institute (ILKKM) Kuching at Uma Sambop, Long Semutut, recently.

On the carnival, he commented it serves as a call for communities to work together in promoting health and collective well-being.

He said four key areas require continued attention, namely the prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension, diabetes and heart disease, the practice of holistic health encompassing physical, mental, emotional and social well-being, as well as regular health screenings and early intervention.

“A healthy community is built on people who support one another, remain united and take collective responsibility for the well-being of everyone,” he added.

He expressed hope that the Community Well-being Carnival would continue in the future, noting that it not only raises awareness of the importance of healthcare but also strengthens cooperation between local communities, government agencies and strategic partners in building more sustainable communities.

At the event, Ugak also announced an allocation of RM200,000 for the construction of a jetty at Uma Sambop, as well as RM10,000 each for the Women’s Bureau and youth groups to support community development initiatives and social programmes.
