KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s proposal to introduce electric buses in Miri is a significant step towards advancing Sarawak’s green economy agenda and sustainable urban development.

Saberkas Batu Lintang Branch secretary Wilson Tan said the proposal, announced during the Taste of Borneo Cultural Carnival (TOBC) 4.0 in Miri recently, reflects the state’s commitment to translating its environmental aspirations into practical initiatives.

He said the move aligns closely with the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which places environmental sustainability at the heart of Sarawak’s long-term development.

“Transitioning Miri’s public transport to electric buses is a massive win for both the local community and Sarawak’s broader green economy goals.

“It also demonstrates how the state is positioning Miri as a key testing ground for smart and sustainable urban development,” he said in a statement today (July 5).

Tan said the proposal would also enable Sarawak to better leverage its growing clean energy capacity, particularly with Miri expected to receive an additional 500 megawatts (MW) of electricity through the combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) project targeted for completion by 2029.

He said powering an electric public transport fleet through the state’s expanding and modernised electricity grid would create a more sustainable and self-reliant energy ecosystem.

“This creates a highly sustainable, self-contained energy loop that supports both public transportation and Sarawak’s broader energy ambitions,” he said.

Tan also described the initiative as an important milestone in establishing a green public transport model that could eventually be replicated in other major urban centres across the state.

“While Kuching has taken the lead with the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) project, deploying electric buses in Miri provides a scalable blueprint that could later be adopted by cities such as Sibu and Bintulu,” he said.

He said that the proposal comes at an opportune time, as Miri’s existing smart bus service has already demonstrated strong public acceptance, recording more than 1.3 million passengers.

“Upgrading this high-demand public transport system to electric technology will ensure Miri’s economic growth continues without compromising environmental sustainability,” he added.
