KUCHING: Police are investigating an alleged assault after a short video showing a man suspected of assaulting a woman went viral on social media.
Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said police received a report on Jul 4 after a four-second video clip began circulating online, showing the man forcing the woman to the ground.
“Investigations found that the incident occurred at around 8pm on Jul 3 in the corridor outside a rented room at Metro City here.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident is believed to have been triggered by a misunderstanding between the victim and the suspect,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, which carries a maximum penalty of one year’s imprisonment, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.
Alexson advised the public against making speculation or sharing unverified information that could interfere with the investigation.
He also urged anyone with information on the incident to contact investigating officer Sgt Mancha at 019-5958260 to assist in the investigation.
