SELANGAU: Repairs to Ramp 1 at the Selangau Interchange will be carried out in stages after a palm oil tanker crash damaged part of the structure.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the collision damaged part of the retaining wall panels and the structure near Abutment B, forcing the affected route to be closed as a safety precaution.

He said unaffected sections would be reopened in stages once they were certified safe, while areas that continued to pose a risk would remain closed until repairs were completed.

“Repair works must be carried out in a safe and systematic manner without creating additional risks for road users.

“I have instructed all relevant parties to ensure that road user safety is not compromised, closely monitor the repair schedule to avoid unnecessary delays, and keep the public informed of road closures, alternative routes and the progress of works,” he said in a Facebook post after inspecting the site today (Jul 6).

Nanta said the collision damaged part of the retaining wall panels as well as the structure near Abutment B, forcing the affected route to be closed for the safety of road users.

The Kapit MP said he understood the concerns raised by the public, noting that the condition of the damaged ramp had attracted attention in both the media and social media.

He acknowledged that the closure had caused inconvenience, particularly to motorists travelling between Bintulu, Mukah and Sibu, but stressed that safety must remain the priority before the route could be reopened.

“I would like to thank members of the public for continuing to provide feedback.

“Constructive feedback helps the government and implementing agencies respond more quickly and responsibly.

“I will continue to monitor the progress of repair works at the Selangau Interchange until the route is fully safe for public use,” he added.
