Car bursts into flames after crash, killing driver

SELANGAU: A local woman was burnt to death after the car she was driving crashed into a guardrail and burst into flames along KM1, Jalan Mukah-Selangau last night (Jul 12).

The victim has been identified as 49-year-old Simbut Sigai.

Mukah police chief DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias said she was driving alone to her home in Sungai Pelugau, Selangau when the fatal accident occurred at around 7.20pm near the Selangau flyover.

Initial investigations found that she is believed to have lost control of her Proton Saga, causing the vehicle to veer off the left side of the road before slamming into a metal guardrail.

The crash left the victim trapped in the driver’s seat as the vehicle was engulfed in flames.

“Firefighters from Selangau station managed to extinguish the blaze before extricating the victim from the wreckage.

“She sustained severe burns all over her body and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from Selangau Health Clinic.

“Her body was later taken to Mukah Hospital for further action,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Anyone who witnessed the accident is urged to contact investigating officer Insp Mohd Rahmat Jalimin at 011-31627137 or the nearest police station to assist in the investigation.

Rizal also advised road users to adhere to speed limits and stay focused while driving to prevent similar accidents.
