SERIAN: A RM32.8 million rural road project linking seven villages in the Kedup constituency will improve accessibility and reduce travel time between Kampung Mantung Mubuk and Kampung Mayang Kawan.

The 8.716km project was launched during a groundbreaking ceremony under the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA) today (July 13).

Deputy Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Datuk Martin Ben, who is also Kedup assemblyman, said the road would shorten the distance between Kampung Mayang Kawan and Kampung Mantung Mubuk from 28.4km to 8.7km, reducing travel time from 33 minutes to just 10.

“This will be a game changer for our area,” he said, adding that the project would improve access for smallholders involved in the oil palm, rubber and livestock sectors, including a Sarawak Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (SALCRA) estate spanning more than 5,000 hectares.

Upon completion, the road will directly benefit 3,653 residents in Kampung Mantung Mubuk, Kampung Mantung Silaga, Kampung Mantung Birawan, Kampung Mantung Mera-u, Kampung Mayang Kawan, Kampung Mayang Mawang and Kampung Pulau Piranuk, as well as three schools in the area.

The project was awarded to Lesmore DC Sdn Bhd, with SIES Engineers Sdn Bhd appointed as the civil and structural engineering consultant. Construction will be carried out to Public Works Department (PWD) R1 standard under a 24 month contract from May 5, 2026, to May 4, 2028.

The Letter of Award for the Jalan Perhubungan Desa Kampung Mantung Mubuk–Kampung Mayang Kawan project was presented by the Public Works Department to the contractor during the ceremony at Dewan Kampung Mantung Mubuk.

The ceremony was witnessed by Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, who chairs the GKCDA.
