KUCHING: St Joseph’s Private School marked another milestone in its 144-year history with the official opening of its newly constructed Extension Block at Jalan Datuk Polycarp Sim.

Archbishop Datuk Dr Simon Poh said the new facility reflects the school’s enduring commitment to holistic education and nurturing future Sarawakian leaders.

Speaking at the ceremony, he said the school’s mission has remained unchanged since its establishment by the Mill Hill priests in 1882 – to provide quality education that enables every child to realise his or her potential through the school motto, Ora et Labora (Prayer and Labour).

He noted that St Joseph’s Private School, established in 2012, continues this legacy alongside SMK St Joseph and St Joseph’s International School.

“The school’s rapid growth from 150 students when it first opened to around 1,600 students today – created an urgent need for additional learning spaces to support academic and co-curricular activities.

“The new extension block provides classrooms and facilities for performing arts, music, science, robotics, STEM education and student activities.”

Archbishop Poh said this during his speech at the officiating ceremony of St Joseph’s Private School extension block this afternoon.

Recalling his own years as a student at St Joseph’s from 1970 to 1982, he described the campus as a place where lifelong friendships, leadership, teamwork and values were cultivated.

“Schools are more than physical buildings – they are places that shape character, instil respect, perseverance and creativity, and prepare young people to contribute meaningfully to society,” he said.

“Hence, I want to extend my appreciation to the Sarawak Government for supporting the restoration of the historic St Joseph’s School building and contributing RM5 million towards expediting the construction of the new extension block.”

The upgraded facilities, including a multipurpose hall, STEM learning spaces, music and dance rooms, library extension, gallery dedicated to Datuk Polycarp Sim, athletics track and parking facilities, will benefit future generations of Sarawakian students.

Archbishop Poh reaffirmed the St Joseph family of schools’ commitment to delivering quality education with a stronger emphasis on STEM, performing arts and Sarawak’s multicultural identity while continuing to produce graduates who will contribute to the state’s development and harmony.
