KUCHING: A repeat drug offender paid dearly for refusing to kick the habit after the Sessions Court here today (July 20) sentenced him to five years and three months’ imprisonment and one stroke of the cane for consuming multiple dangerous drugs.
Judge Iris Awen Jon imposed the sentence on Jamal Lani, 40, after he pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and sentenced under Section 39C(1)(b) of the same Act for repeat offenders.
The provision carries a jail term of between five and seven years and whipping of up to three strokes upon conviction.
He was tested positive for consuming methamphetamine, amphetamine, methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA) and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) at about 7.10pm on Nov 1, 2025 at the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division office of the Bau District Police Headquarters (IPD Bau).
According to the facts of the case, the accused was detained during Op Tapis/Op Bersepadu conducted by officers from the Bau Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division.
Police directed him to provide a urine specimen, which initially tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine using a screening test.
The urine sample was subsequently sent to the Pathology Department in Kuching for laboratory analysis.
The laboratory report confirmed the presence of methamphetamine, amphetamine, MDA and MDMA.
Investigations also revealed that Jamal had four previous convictions under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Court records showed he was convicted in three separate cases at the Bau Magistrate’s Court on June 21, 2024, and again on Nov 28, 2025.
Deputy public prosecutor Chuah Kai Sheng prosecuted the case. Jamal was unrepresented.
