BINTULU: A pregnant woman and an underage teenager were among 49 individuals detained after testing positive for drugs during a major anti-drug operation on July 17.
The individuals were detected during ‘Ops Perdana’ carried out by the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) involving 16 personnel.
Eight drug hotspots across the district were targeted, namely Jalan Bintulu-Sibu, Kampung Dato, Kampung Baru, the Bukit Nyabau squatter settlement, Kampung Jepak, workers’ quarters along Jalan Bintulu-Miri, PPR Bandaria Park and Kampung Penan Muslim Batu 10.
AADK said the integrated operation was conducted to identify new and repeat drug offenders, address complaints lodged by families and the public, and strengthen enforcement efforts in communities identified as being at high risk for drug abuse.
“All 49 individuals screened during the operation tested positive for drugs.
“Of the total, 40 tested positive for methamphetamine, eight for ketum and one for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – psychoactive compound found in cannabis.”
Those who tested positive have been subjected to further action under the relevant laws, including assessments to determine suitable treatment and rehabilitation programmes.
AADK said it will continue intensifying enforcement, detection, treatment and rehabilitation efforts to curb drug abuse and safeguard public safety and community well-being.
