KUCHING: Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Service (CUEPACS) Sarawak has urged the federal government to expedite the promotion process for civil servants.
Its chairman Kullin Djayang said the promotion system should be streamlined to ensure deserving officers receive promotions within a reasonable timeframe.
He said CUEPACS had long called on the government to address delays in the promotion system while taking into account its financial capacity.
“We have been pressing the government seriously on this issue. As the backbone of civil servants, we have consistently raised the matter for the government’s attention while acknowledging its capabilities at the time.
“After bringing up this issue for years, we hope the government will expedite the promotion process for all civil servants.
“There should no longer be any sector where officers have to wait for more than a decade to receive a promotion,” he said in a statement.
Yesterday (Jul 20), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the federal government would review the civil service promotion system, particularly for categories requiring officers to wait up to eight years for promotion.
He also directed Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar to examine categories facing excessively long promotion periods and ensure the process is expedited.
Kullin welcomed the announcement, saying it showed the government was now in a position to address the long-standing concerns of civil servants.
He said the commitment should be translated into action without unnecessary delay.
“The government’s promise should be fulfilled immediately for the benefit and welfare of all civil servants.
“It should not remain merely a study that takes years to complete,” he said.
Kullin also reminded civil servants to reciprocate the government’s recognition by carrying out their duties with greater commitment.
He said every task and instruction should be carried out to the best of their ability while maintaining discipline to uphold the image of the public service.
