KUCHING: Sarawak oil and gas equipment and services (OGSE) vendors secured contracts worth RM49.31 billion between 2014 and March this year, reflecting their growing capability and competitiveness in the nation’s energy industry.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said about 60 per cent of the contracts were implemented in Sarawak, allowing the state to reap the majority of the economic spillover benefits.
He said 267 Sarawak vendors secured contracts worth RM1.57 billion in the first quarter of 2026 alone, accounting for more than 32 per cent of the total value of work awarded in the state.
“This achievement is complemented by cumulative upstream investments exceeding RM310 billion in the fourth quarter of 2025.
“Behind the impressive figures, it reflects the growing credibility, capability and competitiveness of local companies in supporting increasingly sophisticated upstream activities,” he was quoted as saying in a report by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).
He was speaking at the OGSE 2025 Commemoration organised by Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS) at a hotel here on Tuesday (Jul 21).
A total of 82 local vendors received recognition during the ceremony, presented by PETRONAS Group Vice President of Procurement Rashidah Alias and witnessed by Awang Tengah.
Awang Tengah, who is also the International Trade, Industry and Investment minister, said Sarawak would continue strengthening its position as a hybrid petro-electro state in line with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 through the development of the natural gas industry, renewable energy and hydrogen economy.
He urged local vendors to continue investing in human capital development, technology adoption, digitalisation, automation and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance productivity and expand their participation in the regional and global energy value chain.
He also expressed appreciation to PETRONAS for its continued commitment to empowering local vendors through initiatives such as the Vendor Development Programme (VDP), financing support and programmes promoting sustainable and inclusive business practices.
Awang Tengah said strategic collaboration between the Sarawak government, PETRONAS, Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (PETROS), Petroleum Arrangement Contractors (PAC), industry associations and local companies would continue to drive the development of a more competitive, sustainable and high-value energy industry.
