MARVEL Studios has officially confirmed ‘Black Panther 3’, with British actor David Jonsson cast as Prince T’Challa II, the son of the late King T’Challa.
The announcement was made during Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, where director Ryan Coogler also confirmed he would return to helm the third instalment of the blockbuster franchise. The film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on Dec 15, 2028, and will be shot in 70mm large-format film and IMAX.
Jonsson, 32, will portray the adult version of Prince T’Challa II, who was introduced as a child in 2022’s ‘Black Panther:
Wakanda Forever’. The younger character, also known as Toussaint, was played by Divine Love Konadu-Son in the film’s closing scenes.
Speaking on stage after the announcement, Jonsson expressed his gratitude for joining the Marvel family.
“Thank you to this amazing family that I have the honour, privilege and blessing to join. Believe me, the honour is entirely mine,” he said.
Coogler revealed that the new film will centre on the coming-of-age journey of T’Challa II as he embraces his destiny and carries forward the Black Panther legacy. Returning cast members include Letitia Wright as Shuri and Winston Duke as M’Baku, while Academy Award winner Denzel Washington has also been confirmed for an undisclosed role.
The original plan had been for Chadwick Boseman to reprise his role as King T’Challa in the sequel. However, the actor died from colon cancer in 2020 at the age of 43 before filming began.
Rather than recast the role, Marvel reworked ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ to honour Boseman’s legacy, with Shuri taking up the mantle of Black Panther following her brother’s death. The film concluded by revealing that T’Challa had a young son with Nakia, paving the way for the next generation of Wakanda’s protector.
