KUCHING: The Grand Procession of Deity Kuan Ti Kong will return on Aug 6 after being suspended for several years, with more than 100 contingents expected to participate in conjunction with the 2026 Grand Birthday Celebration of Deity Kuan Ti Kong.
The procession, organised by Pertubuhan Penyoking Ngee Khee Tng Kuching, will involve temples, lion and dragon dance associations, cultural groups, decorated vehicle contingents and community organisations from Kuching and other parts of Sarawak.
The organising committee said the procession aims to preserve Chinese traditional culture and folk religious heritage while promoting the values associated with Deity Kuan Ti Kong, including loyalty, righteousness, integrity and courage.
It said the event also provides an opportunity to strengthen cooperation and exchanges among temples, lion and dragon dance associations, and cultural organisations.
Among the highlights of the procession will be dragon and lion dance performances, ceremonial drums and gongs, decorated vehicles, costume groups, large lorry floats, giant mascots, deity statue floats, a police escort, a Red Crescent ambulance and a contingent of devotees.
The procession will begin from the temple at Lorong Ang Cheng Ho 7C and pass through several areas in the city, including Jalan Petanak, Jalan Padungan, Carpenter Street, Abell Road and Petanak Central Market before returning to the temple via Lorong Blacksmith.
The organising committee said the procession was previously held as an annual event for the Chinese community and folk religious groups in Kuching before it was suspended.
It added that the participation of more than 100 contingents showed continued support for Chinese traditional culture and cooperation among community organisations in Kuching and across Sarawak.
