SIBU: An early morning fire caused significant damage to a shophouse and firefighters swiftly reacted to control and extinguish the fire.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said it received a distress call at 4.05am and firefighters from Sungai Merah and Sibu Sentral were mobilised to the location six kilometres away.
“Upon arrival at the scene at 4.11am, firefighters noticed the blaze at the second floor of a shophouse.
“They carried out extinguishing operations using water supplied by a fire engine pump and drawing water from a nearby fire hydrant.
“A ladder was also deployed to access the second floor,” Bomba said.
The affected area measured approximately 40 by 40 square feet, with the building estimated to have suffered 40 per cent damage.
No casualties were reported.
The fire was brought under control at 4.39am.
