SARIKEI: Two road projects spanning about 5.6km are being implemented here to improve connectivity and ease traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours.
The projects comprise the 3.6km upgrading of the Nyelong By-Pass into a four-lane dual carriageway and the construction of the approximately 2km Nyelong Bypass/Kwong Ming Minah Link Road.
The Nyelong By-Pass upgrading covers the stretch from the Meruton/Baji traffic light intersection to the Nyelong Industrial Area traffic light intersection at Meranti.
Meanwhile, the new link road will connect Jalan Nyelong By-Pass with Jalan Kwong Ming Minah, providing motorists with an alternative route within the district.
Sarawak Public Works Department (PWD) director Datuk Dr Cassidy Morris inspected both projects on Thursday (Aug 6), where he was briefed on their progress, ongoing work and challenges at the respective sites.
He stressed that all works must comply with technical specifications and prioritise construction quality to ensure the infrastructure meets the required standards and provides long-term benefits to the people.
“Contractors must strengthen traffic management and safety measures at construction sites while minimising disruption to road users throughout the construction period.
“Site supervision must also be strengthened and the pace of work maintained to ensure both projects are completed within the stipulated timeframe,” he said.
The department said the projects would increase the capacity of the road network and provide safer and more reliable journeys for road users.
It added that both projects formed part of its ongoing efforts to improve Sarawak’s road infrastructure and support the state’s socio-economic development.
