KUCHING: The Sarawak Science Centre (SSCiEX) has drawn close to 40,000 visitors since it opened its doors on July 29, a turnout described as an overwhelming show of interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) from both local and international visitors.
Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said the centre alone logged around 11,000 visitors on Sunday, with some coming from as far as Kalimantan, Indonesia.
“We saw about 5,000 visitors on the first day, and a similar number again on the second.
“The turnout so far has been very encouraging,” he told reporters after officiating at the closing ceremony of the Educational Symposium on Leadership, Advanced Skills and Understanding Heritage for Economic Resilience, organised by the Sarawak Museum Department at SSCiEX here today (Aug 9).
Sarawak Science Centre managing director Dr Peter Morin Nissom said the centre had crossed the 40,000-visitor mark in the nearly two weeks since opening.
“Just today, up to 3pm, we had already welcomed around 11,000 visitors, and the response overall has been very encouraging.
“We’ve had positive feedback across the board, and even had visitors travel in from China and Japan,” he said.
He added that the strong turnout pointed to growing awareness among Sarawakians of the importance of STEM.
For the record, SSCiEX offers visitors of all ages the chance to explore science, technology, innovation and discovery through 22 themed galleries and more than 400 interactive exhibits spread across its five-storey building.
