KUCHING: Eligible students can use the RM400 FLYsiswa digital voucher to purchase domestic economy-class tickets from AirBorneo beginning Aug 11.

The airline announced its participation in the government-backed programme, which subsidises air travel for students travelling between Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan.

The initiative, led by the Ministry of Transport, aims to reduce travel expenses for Malaysian students studying away from home.

It covers eligible students enrolled at public universities, polytechnics, community colleges, matriculation colleges, and teacher education institutes.

AirBorneo chief executive officer Megat Ardian Aminuddin said high airfares should not prevent students from returning home during semester breaks, festive periods, or emergencies.

“For many young Malaysians studying away from home, particularly those travelling between Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo, the cost of flight tickets should never be an obstacle to spending quality time with their families.

“We hope this initiative will significantly ease the financial burden on students and their families, allowing them to focus on their studies while remaining closely connected to home,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Students may check their eligibility through the Ministry of Transport’s portal at subsidiudara.mot.gov.my.

Eligible students can redeem the voucher when booking flights through AirBorneo’s official website or mobile application.

The redemption period for AirBorneo flights runs from Aug 11 to Nov 30, 2026, while tickets purchased under the programme may be used for travel until Dec 31, 2026.

AirBorneo said FLYsiswa bookings would also come with additional baggage allowance and complimentary or discounted flight-date changes to accommodate changes in academic calendars and examination schedules.

However, the airline did not specify the additional baggage allocation or the terms governing the flexible booking options in its statement.

Further information on eligibility, voucher redemption, and flight schedules is available on AirBorneo’s website.
