KUCHING: The Lundu Football League (Liga Bola Sepak Lundu) is making a comeback this year after a seven-year hiatus.

Opar assemblyman, Billy Sujang, said the league’s revival was about more than football, describing it as a joint effort to bring together youth development, sportsmanship and community bonding across the district.

“This is not just about a football competition, but a shared effort to mobilise activities and unity for the community in the outlying areas,” he said.

He said eight of the 16 teams were from the Opar constituency, with the remaining eight from the Tanjong Datu side, calling the turnout proof of strong interest and potential among players and communities in the district.

Tanjong Datu assemblyman, Azizul Annuar Adenan, added that the league also gave organisers a chance to spot promising young talent in the district, noting he had been in contact with football coaches to help identify players with potential for further development.

A total of RM9,700 in cash prizes is up for grabs, with RM5,000 for the champion, RM3,000 for the first runner-up, RM1,000 for third place and RM700 for fourth place, alongside individual awards for Best Player of the Final, Best Team and Top Scorer.

“Our hope is that the Lundu Football League does not stop this year alone, but grows into a truly big and sustainable annual sporting event,” Billy said.

The tournament will be held at the Lundu District Sports Complex and the Seabird Football Field in Kampung Sebat, starting from August 15 to September 27.

The league’s opening ceremony is scheduled for August 15 (coming Saturday) at 2:00 pm, officiated by Azizul and Billy, while the closing ceremony is expected to be officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, in conjunction with the Batang Kayan Lundu Regatta 2026.
