MIRI: A young motorcyclist was arrested for allegedly displaying a false licence plate during a police operation codenamed ‘Ops Samseng Jalanan’ in the city.
The 20-year-old man was detained under Section 108(3)(f) of the Road Transport Act 1987 during the operation conducted by the district Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division from 11 pm on Saturday night to 4.30 am today.
Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the offence carries a fine of up to RM20,000, imprisonment for a term of up to five years, or both, upon conviction.
The operation covered several locations including Miri Bypass Road, Jalan Marina, Canada Hill, Jalan Piasau, Jalan Tudan and Jalan Pujut.
“During the operation, 27 individuals were inspected along with 20 motorcycles.
“Aside from that, police also seized 11 motorcycles under Section 60(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, while issuing 58 traffic summonses for various offences,” he said.
Among the offences detected included riding without a valid licence, illegal structural modifications, excessively noisy exhaust systems, absence of side mirrors or licence plates, and the use of fancy licence plates.
Mohd Farhan stated that police would not compromise with individuals involved in street activities that could endanger themselves and other road users.
Members of the public are urged to comply with traffic laws, avoid modifying vehicles beyond their original specifications and refrain from activities that could disrupt public order.
