KUCHING: Nine Baden-Powell Award candidates have turned months of planning into reality with the organisation of Rover Expo 2026, marking the final practical evaluation towards scouting’s highest youth achievement.
Sarawak Chief Scout Commissioner, John Lim Boon Beng, officially launched the expo at The Spring Shopping Mall here today (Aug 16), where he called on young scouts to practise scouting values beyond camps, meetings and the wearing of uniforms.
In his address, Lim highlighted the concept of “HED”: Harmony, Environment and Discovery, a leadership slogan he introduced after assuming office to guide young Scouts in becoming responsible citizens.
“Harmony, Environment and Discovery are not merely three linguistic representations. They represent values which I hope will become part of the character and everyday life of our young Scouts,” he said.
He explained that Harmony emphasises mutual respect, cooperation and strong relationships among people from different cultural backgrounds, both within the scouting movement and Malaysian society.
Environment, meanwhile, encourages scouts to take an active role in conservation, minimise wastage and promote sustainable practices, while Discovery focuses on lifelong learning, self-improvement and the willingness to embrace new experiences.
Lim said these principles were particularly important for Rover Scouts as they transition from youth into adulthood and take on greater responsibilities in society.
He reminded them that the values developed through scouting, including integrity, teamwork and service, should also be reflected at home, in their future workplaces and within their communities.
“Do not merely be a Scout when you wear the Scout uniform. Be a Scout in the way you live your life,” he said.
Lim said a Scout’s journey should ultimately be measured by their character and conduct rather than merely their participation in scouting activities.
Rover Expo 2026 is organised entirely by nine local Baden-Powell Award candidates, who spent several months planning and executing the programme as part of their final practical evaluation.
The expo features interactive workshops, panel discussions and an exhibition aimed at providing visitors and fellow scouts with fresh perspectives on modern Rovering.
Members of the public and the scouting fraternity are encouraged to visit the exhibition and participate in the activities throughout the programme.
