TANJUNG MANIS: An integrated maritime enforcement operation in Sarawak waters led to 24 inspections, with authorities issuing a verbal warning and seizing a codend (pukat keroncong), which is known to be the catch-collecting section of a fishing net.

The four-day MARDOF operation, conducted from Aug 15 to 18, involved the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Tanjung Manis Zone and the Sarawak Marine Fisheries Department (JPLS) with two MMEA assets and one JPLS vessel.

MMEA Tanjung Manis Zone director Commander Mahkos Juing said the operation covered waters from Muara Lassa, Muara Paloh and the Rajang estuary to Sarikei.

He stated that the operation was crucial in strengthening coordination between the two agencies and ensuring fishing activities complied with the law, particularly the Fisheries Act 1985.

“Integrated cooperation such as this enables both agencies to coordinate enforcement actions more effectively, while sharing expertise and information related to fishing activities.

“This approach is important to ensure the country’s fisheries resources remain protected and fishing activities are carried out responsibly.”

Despite the 24 inspections, no arrests or compounds were recorded during the operation.

Cmdr Mahkos said they would continue conducting joint operations with relevant agencies to ensure fishing activities in Sarawak waters comply with regulations while safeguarding the state’s fisheries resources and marine ecosystem.
