KUCHING: An 18-year-old student was arrested after police seized 1.08 kilogrammes (kg) of suspected cannabis worth RM3,240 in MJC New Township here on Thursday (Aug 20).

Padawan police chief Supt Barry William said the suspect was detained by the district narcotics police at about 11.30 am following information on suspected drug trafficking activities.

He stated the suspect was detained at the letterbox storage room near MJC New Township.

“The suspect was allegedly holding a grey Nike backpack with his left hand while attempting to place a white J&T parcel into the bag when police detained him.

“Further inspection of the parcel uncovered a bubble-wrapped package containing a brown box labelled ‘AB’, which contained an aluminium foil package.

“Inside were 11 packets of dried plant material suspected to be cannabis,” he said in a statement.

The seizure comprised five transparent packets labelled ‘Tangie Indica 20 per cent, Sativa 80 per cent, THC 34 per cent, Indoor 100 per cent’, five packets labelled ‘Ice Cream Cake Indica 70 per cent, Sativa 30 per cent, THC 35 per cent, Indoor 100 per cent’, and another transparent/black packet containing dried flower suspected to be cannabis.

The total gross weight of the suspected drugs was 1,080 grammes, with an estimated value of RM3,240.

Police also seized a black Lexus IS 250, valued at about RM35,000, under a separate forfeiture-of-property investigation.

Preliminary urine screening on the suspect tested positive for ketamine and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), while police checks found no previous criminal record.

Initial investigations found that the suspect was a student in Kuching and allegedly knew about the drugs contained in the parcel.

The suspect also told police that he was promised RM4,000 to collect the parcel on the instructions of an individual known as ‘Franky’.

Police are continuing investigations to identify the syndicate and other individuals believed to be involved.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
