KUCHING: The Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) and Kuala Lumpur & Selangor Furniture Association (KSFA) are exploring collaboration to strengthen the state’s timber and furniture sectors.

The initiative follows a courtesy visit by a nine-member KSFA delegation, led by its president, Cindy Kong, to STIDC on Thursday (Aug 20).

STIDC General Manager Datuk Zainal Abidin Abdullah said the engagement serves as a vital platform to pair KSFA’s strong manufacturing capabilities and international market reach with Sarawak’s sustainable timber resources and expanding industrial infrastructure.

He said Sarawak was moving towards greater utilisation of timber sourced from sustainable and renewable forest plantations, in line with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030).

“STIDC is fully committed to supporting KSFA members interested in establishing or expanding their operations in Sarawak,” Zainal said, expressing hope that the meeting would mark the start of continuous engagement with local industry players.

Meanwhile, Kong said the association was keen to explore how Sarawak’s timber and plywood resources could be further utilised to produce higher-value furniture products for domestic and international markets.

During the visit, STIDC senior assistant general manager of Licensing, Planning and Industrial Development, Nicholas Andrew Lissem briefed the delegation on the development plans and future direction of the state’s furniture sector.

The engagement is expected to create new business opportunities and strengthen industry linkages between furniture players in Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia.
