KUCHING: While birthdays are often marked with celebrations and gifts, Rajani Borhan chose to celebrate turning 57 by giving something of his own – blood for patients in need.
Rajani made his 121st blood donation today (Aug 21), continuing a practice he first began at the age of 20.
Over the years, donating blood has become a regular commitment for Rajani, who said he would make every effort to respond whenever he received a call from Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) seeking blood donors.
“For me, donating blood is a responsibility and a way of helping others. I do not expect anything in return because my main intention is to help patients who need it,” he said.
Apart from being able to contribute to patients in need, Rajani said he also felt healthier and more energetic after donating blood.
He encouraged younger people who are healthy and eligible to consider becoming blood donors, stressing that donations should be made sincerely without expecting rewards.
“Blood is not something to be bought and sold. If we are healthy and eligible to donate, let us help those who need it,” he said.
Rajani’s commitment has also inspired his eldest daughter, Fadilatun Nisa Rajani, 34, who has become a regular blood donor herself.
His latest donation coincided with his 57th birthday, marking more than three decades since he first began giving blood.
The SGH Blood Bank highlighted his story as an example of sustained commitment to blood donation and helping patients in need.
