SERIAN: A new RM10-million sports arena is being planned for Serian, with the proposed facility to be built near the Serian Sports Complex.

Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus said the Sarawak Government had approved the allocation for the Serian Sports Arena project under the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA).

He said a site had already been identified, while planning is underway to determine the types of sporting facilities to be included in the arena.

“We have already secured the allocation for the project.

“The site has also been identified, and now we are looking at the facilities to be included,” he told reporters after officiating at the ground-breaking ceremony for the upgrading of the Serian Sports Complex here today (Aug 21).

John said the arena was envisioned as a place housing various sporting facilities to encourage greater participation in sports among the local community.

He said local youths had also been given an opportunity to suggest the types of facilities they wanted to see at the new arena.

Around the middle of last year, John sought feedback from youths in Bukit Semuja through a WhatsApp group on suitable sporting facilities for the project.

“We are looking at feedback from the youths on the various sporting facilities that we want to include in that particular area.

“We want to encourage a sports-loving community and active participation in sports,” he said.

John said the project would next undergo the necessary documentation and site regularisation processes.

He expressed hope that these processes could be completed in time for the project to be tendered before the end of this year.
