SERIAN: A total of 29 landowners and claimants have received RM1,423,550.90 in compensation to facilitate the land acquisition process for the construction of the Sungai Sadong Bridge in Kampung Sorak Melayu.

A total of 37 compensation cheques were handed over to recipients from Kampung Sorak Sumpung, Kampung Sorak Dayak, Kampung Sorak Mawang and Kampung Sorak Melayu.

Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus said the bridge was crucial to improving connectivity for residents, particularly during the flood season.

“The project is among the priorities following the establishment of the Greater Kuching Development Coordination Agency (GKCDA), in an effort to strengthen connectivity and open up opportunities for socioeconomic development in the surrounding areas.”

John said this during the compensation cheque presentation at the Serian Resident’s Office meeting room here today.

He urged the contractor to ensure that the project was carried out according to specifications and within the stipulated timeframe.

He also called on residents to engage with the contractor and relevant agencies should any issues arise during the implementation of the project.

He expressed confidence that the bridge would spur development in Kampung Sorak Melayu and surrounding areas, while creating more economic opportunities and improving residents’ well-being.

Meanwhile, Serian Division Land and Survey Department superintendent Abdul Khalil Amit said four titled lots and three untitled lots had been acquired for the project.

He said the project was approved on July 16, 2025, while land acquisition notices under Sections 5(3), 5(4) and 48 of the Land Code were approved on Feb 16, 2025.

He added that survey work by the Land and Survey Department began on June 24, 2026 and was completed on July 17, 2026.
