KUCHING: The new partnership will serve as a conduit for businesses in Sarawak and Western Australia to explore trade, investment and expansion opportunities in each other’s markets.

This follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Sarawak Australia Business Chamber (SABC) and the Western Australian Chinese Chamber of Commerce (WACCC), witnessed by Western Australia Premier Roger Cook.

The signing ceremony was held recently in Perth during the Western Australia-Asia Business Forum, witnessed by Western Australia Premier Roger Cook, who officiated the forum organised by WACCC.

The MOU signed between the two chambers primarily aims to establish a strategic partnership between WACCC and SABC to facilitate and promote trade, investment and business activities between Sarawak and Western Australia.

It is intended to facilitate businesses from Western Australia looking to expand or invest in Sarawak and the region, while also acting as a conduit for Sarawak businesses expanding or investing in Western Australia.

SABC President Rodger Chan Siong Boh represented the chamber at the forum and signing, where SABC was also an event partner, while WACCC President Tony Chong represented the chamber.

Chan said Cook was aware of the similarities between Western Australia and Sarawak during their conversations.

“Both are the biggest state in their respective country, both are very rich in natural resources including oil & gas, both contributed significantly to the respective country’s GDP and both has similar population, same time zone etc.

“Kuching is also the nearest Malaysian city to Perth,” he said in a Facebook post on Aug 6.

Chan also extended invitation to Cook to visit Sarawak and briefed him on the opportunities in Sarawak including green energy and hydrogen.

He hopes that the Sarawak government and Air Borneo can have a direct flight from Kuching to Perth in the near future.

“This can also help to improve trade, tourism and links between Sarawak and Western Australia,” he said.
