SERIAN: The revived Serian Rafting Challenge is set to become an annual event as organisers work towards placing it on the international rafting calendar.
Serian MP, Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem, said the challenge should be held every year after it was not organised in 2025 because the ministry was informed too late.
“Hopefully, we will have it again next year and in the years that follow.
“We hope to make it an annual event,” he said during a press conference at Dewan Masyarakat Serian here today.
Some 80 teams have registered so far, with more entries expected before the competition.
Race director, Awang Saifeluddin Awangku Karim, said this year’s edition would introduce RFID electronic timing, standardised categories, and uniform raft specifications.
He said the improvements were intended to strengthen the event’s credibility and attract more international participants.
“We want the Borneo Raft Safari to become internationally known by placing it on the world rafting calendar,” he said.
Awang Saifeluddin said organisers had contacted an international rafting body and were preparing the required participation records, safety procedures, checkpoint arrangements, and emergency response plan.
Registration, accommodation details and previous race results will be available on the Borneo Raft Safari website, while official results will be published within one day of the race.
The challenge is also part of the Borneo Raft Safari league, which allows teams to accumulate points by competing in rafting events across Sarawak.
Meanwhile, Serian District Council Chairman, Datuk Peter Minos, said the event would create earning opportunities for communities at Kampung Tema Mawang and Tebakang Old Town.
Residents will be able to sell food, drinks, handicrafts and other products to participants and spectators.
“In a small way, we are encouraging our small traders and sellers to earn something, at least for the day,” he said.
Participants may also purchase bamboo rafts from local makers or construct their own according to the required specifications.
The two-day programme will be held on September 25 and 26, with the 25km race from Kampung Tema Mawang to Tebakang Old Town taking place on September 26.
