Man jailed, fined RM2,000 for stealing car rims

MIRI: A 35-year-old local was sentenced to 12 months in prison and fined RM2,000 after pleading guilty to stealing two car rims from a business premises in Miri.

The theft took place on Aug 16 at a premises along the Miri By-pass, after the owner was alerted to suspicious activity by a closed-circuit television (CCTV) notification on his mobile phone.

The owner subsequently reviewed the CCTV footage and saw an unidentified man climbing over the fence of his premises before entering the storage area and taking the car rims.

Police investigations found that the storage area was an unfenced-roofed compound enclosed by a concrete wall. It was used to keep vehicles involved in road accidents while they were awaiting repairs.

Following investigations, police, led by Assistant Superintendent Goldy, traced the suspect to the front of a residential premises in Kampung Pujut Tanjung Batu, Miri, where he was arrested.

Police also recovered the two stolen car rims from the suspect, along with receipts showing their sale.

The suspect was subsequently brought before the Miri Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty to the offence.

The court imposed a 12-month jail term and a RM2,000 fine.

Police urged members of the public with information relating to the case or other criminal activities to contact the Miri district police headquarters or the nearest police station.

They also called for continued public cooperation in helping maintain law and order in the community.
