MIRI: A RM1.481 million upgrading project at Jalan Ilmu, Desa Senadin, is set to raise the road level and restore flood-damaged sections in a bid to reduce the risk of recurring inundation.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the project included raising the road level by about half a metre, particularly at low-lying sections that were badly affected by the floods.
“Jalan Ilmu was among the areas seriously affected by the floods as certain sections of the road are low-lying.
“Through this project, the road level will be raised by about half a metre to reduce the risk of the road being inundated in the future,” he said after inspecting the project site here yesterday (Aug 28).
Lee said the four-month project, which runs from Aug 11 to Dec 10, involved road repairs and upgrading works, including the construction of concrete kerbs, laying of road base along 510 metres, premix surfacing along 1,245 metres, construction of road shoulders and road line marking.
He said flood recovery efforts also covered several roads in Desa Senadin, Permyjaya and Tudan that were damaged by the floods.
A special additional allocation of about RM10 million had been secured for resurfacing and road restoration works in the affected areas, he said.
Of the amount, RM5.78 million would be used to resurface seven roads in Desa Senadin, RM3.07 million for eight roads in Permyjaya and RM1.15 million for five roads in Tudan.
The Senadin State Assemblyman stressed that the RM10 million allocation was special funding secured specifically to address flood-related damage and was separate from the Miri City Council’s (MBM) regular maintenance allocation.
“The council needs to prepare the design and go through the tender process before the works can begin.
“For the RM10 million allocation, the tender process is expected to be called in the first or second week of September, with resurfacing works expected to begin in October,” he said.
Lee said he hoped all resurfacing and restoration works could be completed before the end of the year to provide residents with safer and better road facilities.
He added that the Sarawak Government would continue to prioritise basic infrastructure, particularly road improvements, to enhance public safety and convenience while reducing the impact of flooding on local communities.
