SIBU: Clad in colourful Nyonya kebayas, members of the Sayang Sayang group came together to celebrate Malaysia’s 69th Independence Day by embracing the country’s rich multicultural heritage through food, music and friendship.
A total of 30 members participated in the gathering, which was held in Nonya Kitchen by Sonia in Kuching conjunction with the National Day celebration on Aug 31.
Sayang Sayang group chairperson Lorna Hui said the gathering was organised to celebrate Merdeka while giving members an opportunity to experience and appreciate the colourful Baba Nyonya culture.
“Celebrate Merdeka with a taste of Baba Nyonya heritage,” she said.
The members enjoyed a hearty dinner featuring Nyonya cuisine before spending the evening dining and dancing in the company of friends.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, the women danced to songs including ‘Oh Malaysia’ by Anneke Gronloh, ‘Rasa Sayang’, ‘Bengawan Solo’ and ‘Ayo Mama’.
Hui said the celebration was more than just an occasion to mark the nation’s Independence Day.
It was also a way of highlighting the values of peace, unity, harmony and friendship among Malaysians while celebrating the country’s diverse multicultural heritage.
Through the gathering, the Sayang Sayang group hoped to remind Malaysians of the importance of preserving the country’s rich cultural traditions and strengthening the bonds of friendship and unity among people of different backgrounds.
Among the members present was former Red FM deejay Jennifer Lau.
