SIBU: A 25-year-old woman was fined RM9,000 by the Magistrates’ Court here yesterday (Sept 2) after a late-night collision involving her car and a cyclist ended in the latter’s death last year.
Magistrate Romario Jonoi imposed the fine on Monica Yeo Siew Yieng after she was convicted under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving without due care and attention.
The court also ordered that her driving licence be endorsed with the particulars of the conviction.
Yeo was further ordered to serve nine months in prison if she failed to pay the fine.
According to the prosecution’s brief facts, the incident occurred at about 1 am on Nov 17, 2025, along Jalan Dr Wong Soon Kai.
Yeo was driving a car along the road when the vehicle collided with a bicycle ridden by Mazeri Ayong, 45, who was travelling along the same stretch of road.
The prosecution represented by DPP Mohd Syazani said Yeo had failed to exercise due care and attention and had failed to take proper care in controlling and handling the vehicle, resulting in the collision.
Mazeri sustained injuries in the crash and was subsequently pronounced dead at about 1.59 am by a medical officer at Hospital Sibu.
Police investigations subsequently concluded that the collision occurred as a result of Yeo’s failure to exercise due care and attention while driving.
The original charge was later amended to state that Yeo had driven the vehicle without due care and attention for other persons using the road.
Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 provides for a fine of between RM5,000 and RM10,000, together with imprisonment for a term of up to 12 months upon conviction.
