KUCHING: Bekenu incumbent Datuk Rosey Yunus is hoping more women candidates will be fielded to contest the 13th Sarawak Election.

In renewing her call for a bigger women representation in the state assembly she expressed hope that Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg would give the matter due consideration.

She said increasing the number of women candidates remained an aspiration among female representatives, and hoped the coalition would take steps towards fulfilling it in the forthcoming state polls.

Rosey who is caretaker Deputy Minister for Women, Early Childhood and Community Well-being Development was speaking to reporters after officiating at the Inclusive Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) Awareness Outreach Programme Series 2/2026 here today.

GPS had four women assemblypersons from Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) prior to the dissolution of the state assembly. Besides Rosey, they were Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah (Dalat), Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali (Samariang) and Dayang Noorazah Awang Sohor (Lingga).

On whether she would be retained as the GPS candidate for Bekenu, Rosey said the decision rested with Abang Johari.

“In politics, we go through the selection process every five years. Whether I will continue serving for another term is a decision that rests with the Premier,” she said.

Reflecting on development in Bekenu over the past five years, Rosey said she was satisfied with the progress made.

But she said only the constituents could truly attest to the impact of the development initiatives carried out in the area.

Rosey has held the Bekenu seat for four consecutive terms since winning it in 2006.
