KUCHING: The construction of the Batang Rambungan Bridge has reached 73.27 per cent completion.

Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Aidel Lariwoo said the project is currently behind its scheduled target of 74.3 per cent but expressed confidence the contractor would be able to expedite construction.

“I believe that with the contractor’s commitment, the progress can be accelerated because as you can see, the first cable-stay segment has been successfully installed.

“One of the bridge’s eight cable-stay segments has been completed, with the remaining seven to be installed,” he told reporters after a working visit to the project site here today (July 7).

“The contractor is making every effort to ensure the bridge is completed by the end of this year because this is the most important bridge along the first section of the Coastal Road alignment,” he added.

He also said that the project is being closely monitored, particularly the installation of the cable-stay system using a form traveller.

According to him, several critical engineering procedures, including tensioning of steel bars within the H-beams and pre-tensioning of the cable stays, must be completed to ensure the bridge meets all required technical and quality specifications.

The RM82 million Batang Rambungan Bridge forms part of the first section of the Coastal Road, an 896-kilometre route linking Sampadi in Lundu to Bakam in Miri.

An earlier report in January recorded the project’s physical progress at 64.95 per cent, with the bridge expected to be completed before December 2026, ahead of its original contractual completion date in May 2027.

Construction work progresses on the Batang Rambungan Bridge during the working site visit.
