Labourer jailed six months for jewellery theft

KUCHING: A labourer was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment by the Magistrates’ Court here today for stealing jewellery worth RM18,176 from a shop at Tabuan Plaza.

Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali imposed the sentence on Mohd Amirul Lukman Jemat, 30, after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment and may also include a fine upon conviction.

According to the facts of the case, Mohd Amirul stole one Moldavite 925 Pendant valued at RM12,888 and one Burmese Jade Ring worth RM5,288 from a jewelry shop near Tabuan Plaza, Jalan Bayor Bukit, at about 12.14 pm on July 2.

The offence was discovered after the complainant lodged a police report at about 5.31 pm on the same day after finding that the two items were missing from the premises.

Following investigations, police arrested Mohd Amirul at the car park in front of Tabuan Plaza Shopping Centre at about 4.10 pm on July 3.

During mitigation the accused told the court that he committed the offence to obtain money for food.

He also appealed for a lenient custodial sentence.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Aidil Akmal Sharidan prosecuted the case. The accused was unrepresented.
