MIRI: About 70 per cent of a one-storey Post Office Malaysia building in Bekenu was damaged in a fire on Saturday morning, according to the Fire and Rescue Department.

The department said it received an emergency call at 8.44 am and dispatched a Scania fire engine from Batu Niah Fire and Rescue Station, about 38km away.

Firefighters arrived at the scene at 9.21 am and began operations two minutes later. The blaze was brought under control at 11 am before the operation ended at 12.30 pm.

A department spokesman said the affected building was a permanent one-storey structure measuring about 40ft by 40ft.

Firefighters used one 400ft hose line with two water jets to douse the fire, drawing water from a nearby river.

The team carried out overhaul work after extinguishing the blaze to ensure there were no remaining sources of fire before declaring the scene safe.

Fire and Rescue Department investigation officers subsequently arrived at the scene to investigate the incident.

The cause of the fire and the estimated losses have yet to be determined and remain under investigation.

Several agencies assisted in the operation, including the Police, Civil Defence Force, Sarawak Energy, postal staff and RELA.

A total of 15 personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department, police, Civil Defence Force, Sarawak Energy, the post office and RELA were involved.

The firefighting team returned to Batu Niah Fire and Rescue Station at about 1 pm.
