KUCHING: The Brooke Dockyard Industrial Heritage Museum will open its doors to the public on Tuesday (April 21).
Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the museum is expected to emerge as a new attraction in the city, further strengthening heritage and history-based tourism.
He said the Brooke Dockyard – now known as the Brooke Dockyard Industrial Heritage Museum – was the first shipyard established in Borneo and Malaysia, dating back to 1912 during the era of Charles Brooke.
“Initially, it served royal vessels before expanding into ship repairs, oil and gas support, and engineering training, making it the region’s first industrial workplace,” he said as reported by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).
He made these remarks after paying a courtesy call on Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the Satria Pertiwi Complex today (April 20) to formally invite him to officiate the museum’s opening, while also briefing him on the event programme and the latest developments involving the Sarawak Museum Department.
Abdul Karim said the museum features a range of galleries, including original dockyard machinery and exhibits tracing the evolution of industry.
“For now, admission is free. This opening will complement existing attractions such as the Borneo Cultures Museum and the Sarawak Cultural Village,” he said.
Also present during the courtesy call were Sarawak Museum Department’s Director, Nancy Jolhi, and Deputy Director, Yasmin Khalid Nicholls.
