KUCHING: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap Yau Sin officiated at the School Mental Health Initiative at SJK Chung Hua Batu 4½ today, underscoring the importance of nurturing students’ mental and emotional well-being alongside their academic development.

The programme, organised by Bodhi Counselling Centre, aims to raise awareness of psychological well-being among students, provide practical coping tools, and foster a culture of empathy, understanding and mutual support within schools and the wider community.

Yap commended Bodhi Counselling Centre for taking the lead in promoting mental health awareness among school-going children and creating a supportive environment where students can learn to manage emotions, build resilience, and seek help when needed.

“Mental health is just as important as physical health. Our children face various challenges in their daily lives, whether in school, at home, or in their social interactions.

“It is therefore crucial that we equip them with the knowledge, confidence, and support systems necessary to maintain good mental well-being,” he said.

Yap emphasised that early intervention and awareness programmes play an important role in helping young people understand their emotions, cope with stress, and develop positive relationships with their peers, teachers, and families.

He also highlighted the crucial role played by parents, educators, counsellors, and community organisations in fostering a caring and inclusive environment where children feel safe to express themselves and seek assistance when facing difficulties.

“Building a mentally healthy community begins with our young people. By encouraging open conversations and reducing the stigma surrounding mental health, we can empower our children to grow into confident, resilient, and compassionate individuals,” he added.

Expressing his appreciation to the Bodhi Counselling Centre, participating schools, teachers, parents, volunteers and all stakeholders involved, Yap noted that such collaborative efforts reflect the community’s collective commitment to safeguard the well-being of future generations.

As the elected representative for Kota Sentosa, Yap reiterated his commitment to support programmes that promote holistic development, strengthen family and community ties, and enhance the overall well-being of residents.
