KUCHING: Proficiency in English and Mandarin can provide Sarawak’s Bumiputera community with a competitive advantage in building networks and seizing opportunities in the global economy, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said mastery of international languages is essential in equipping the younger generation with knowledge, particularly in science and technology, which are crucial for global connectivity.

However, he stressed that the use of English should not be viewed as undermining patriotism or the status of one’s mother tongue.

“English is important, and there is nothing wrong with using an international language because we want our children to develop a global mindset and outlook,” he said in his speech at the Tanjong Lobang College (TLC) Reunion and Fundraising Dinner here on Saturday (July 11).

He said Sarawak cannot focus solely on domestic affairs, as its economy is closely linked to international trade and global engagement.

“As a trading economy, Sarawakians need to master international languages to build networks and communicate effectively with the global community. We continue to uphold a bilingual education system,” he said.

On the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), Abang Johari said the state’s recognition of the qualification was made in response to changes in the global economic landscape and China’s emergence as a major economic power.

He said proficiency in Mandarin would enable the Bumiputera community to strengthen cooperation and build stronger ties with the non-Bumiputera community in an increasingly open economy.

“Former Chief Minister, the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, together with us, decided to recognise the UEC because the international economy has changed and China has become a major economic power.

“Otherwise, we would be at a disadvantage because we would lack that knowledge,” he said.

Abang Johari added that for the Bumiputera community, mastering Mandarin is an added advantage, as language serves as an important medium for building networks and expanding opportunities.

He said the recognition of the UEC could encourage more Bumiputeras to become multilingual, ensuring they remain competitive amid evolving economic developments.

He emphasised that Sarawakians should continue learning from one another and equip themselves with up-to-date knowledge to adapt to changes in the global economy.
