Capsized vessel refloated, search continues for missing crew

SEBUYAU: The MV Tung Sung cargo ship that capsized in Pulau Burung waters on July 19, was refloated today (July 30).

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Sarawak director First Admiral Zin Azman Md Yunus in an update, said the vessel that was carrying landscaping rocks, will be towed to a location about eight nautical miles northwest of Sebuyau.

“The search operation to locate the remaining four crew members believed to have been trapped in the ship, will meanwhile continue tomorrow (July 31).

“The Hazmat team from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) will lead the search,” he said.

Zin Azman added that a search and rescue (SAR) forward base will be open at 8am at the Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) Sebuyau jetty.

The MV Tung Sung cargo ship which had capsized and overturned on July 19, was successfully refloated after four days of assessment and reflotation works by the appointed company Hap Lee Shipping.

In the event that a body is found, it will be taken to the jetty to be handed over to the police for further actions.

On July 19, MV Tung Sung encountered strong waves causing it to capsize near Pulau Burung at around 9pm.

Due to communication difficulties at sea, the SAR operation could only be initiated the following day (July 20).

A total of eight crew members, aged between 20 and 52, were onboard the ship at the time of the accident.

Among them were Chieng Siew Ngiek, Wong Hua Wu, and Stimba Chuit from Sibu; Myanmar nationals That Min July, Ye Lin Htet, Hla Win Tun, and Tun Lin Oo; and Indonesian Lido Ali Purwanto.

On July 22, rescuers managed to find four bodies believed to be crew members between 1 pm and 5.25 pm.
