MIRI: A 27-year-old man has been arrested after CCTV footage helped police identify a suspect linked to a break-in at a ‘nasi lemak’ restaurant in Permyjaya earlier this month.

The suspect was detained during operations in Pujut at about 4:50 am today, nearly two weeks after the burglary, which left the business owner with losses estimated at RM590.

Miri police said the break-in occurred at about 3:43 am on June 5 at a restaurant in Pusat Bandar Commercial Centre, Permyjaya Phase 3.

CCTV footage allegedly showed a man entering the premises and making off with a cash collection machine from the counter.

Following investigations and intelligence gathering, a team from the Crime Prevention Branch of Miri Central Police Station, led by station chief, ASP Goldy Jangan, tracked down and arrested the suspect.

Police also recovered the cash collection machine believed to have been stolen, along with clothing allegedly worn by the suspect during the incident.

The man is being held at Miri Central Police Station to assist investigations under Section 457 of the Penal Code for housebreaking and theft.

Police have urged business owners to strengthen security measures, including installing suitable surveillance systems, ensuring premises are securely locked after operating hours and avoiding leaving cash or valuables unattended.

Members of the public are also encouraged to report suspicious activities to enable prompt police action.
