SIBU: Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee has pledged to improve facilities at the Kemunyang Islamic Cemetery.

The Nangka assemblyman acknowledged the cemetery’s current amenities, including a prayer hall and a van.

“We also have an innovative e-cemetery system.

“Families can easily locate their loved ones’ plots online using designated lot numbers. We are committed to further improving these facilities,” he told reporters during the tree-planting programme at the cemetery in conjunction with the 2024 International Forests Day celebrations for Sibu Division today (June 15).

However, specific details regarding the upcoming upgrades were not disclosed by him.

Meanwhile, the programme was a collaborative effort between the Sarawak Forestry Department, the Sibu Islamic Welfare Trust Board (LAKIS), and the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera (PBB) Nangka Service Centre.

The initiative involved planting 510 trees at the cemetery, with the remaining 1,000 to be planted in phases.

Sarawak Forestry director Datuk Hamden Mohammad said the programme was aligned with the national goal of planting 100 million trees.

“Remarkably, Sarawak surpassed its target of 35 million trees last Saturday.

“Despite achieving this milestone, our commitment to planting continues,” he said.
