MUKAH: The Chinese arch project at Jalan Tiong Hua here is nearing completion.

Considered to be the first of its kind, it is expected to be a new tourist attraction to this town.

New Sarawak Tribune on Thursday (Oct 15) discovered that the main structure of the project, costing RM150,000 had been completed.

Mukah Chinese Community Organisation chairperson Mary Ting Mee Yien said the contractor is currently doing a few final touches to the project, including adorning the arch with certain animal replicas as well as installing lightings.

“Hopefully, the project could be completed this month,” she said adding that eight local people’s representatives here all supported the iconic project.

During the groundbreaking ceremony last March, Ting revealed that Jalan Tiong Hua was the only one in town with a Chinese name, while the rest were all in non-Chinese.

Mukah MP Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib officiated at the project’s groundbreaking ceremony.

It was expected to complete last June, but this was delayed by the movement control order (MCO) imposed starting March 18, due to Covid-19 pandemic.
