KUCHING: Good news items are news that can have a positive impact on readers or society, says Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) Publisher director Malia Taibi.
Speaking to journalists from Suara Sarawak and New Sarawak Tribune here, she said producing good news had various strategies and characteristics in sharing views and information to the readers.
She said that among the strategies were identifying topics, finding facts, providing context – things the audience needs to know, making an impact, and evoking emotions.
“It is like when we tell a story, that is, we convey the story well and the people who receive it can understand it…it can also connect journalists with outsiders,” she said.
She said this at a workshop titled ‘Writing Award-Winning Article’ at the Suara Sarawak-New Sarawak Tribune’s office here on Tuesday (Feb 14).
Malia stressed that being a journalist too must come with having an interest in the journalism field.
With this, she said, it could help journalists produce good, quality news and receive recognition at the same time winning various awards.
Commenting on the writing that captured the hearts of the jury in every award, she said that a piece of article needed to start with planning and research.
“What is important is that it has a storyline, quotation and human interest.”
