KUCHING: Contractors involved in construction projects have been reminded to prioritise safety at all times following the fatal incident at the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project last Tuesday.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor, Datuk Wee Hong Seng, said every construction site carries inherent risks, making continuous vigilance, proper supervision and strict compliance with safety requirements essential.
He stressed that contractors must ensure the safety of both their workers and the public, particularly road users passing through areas surrounding construction activities.
“Safety is a shared responsibility and must never be taken lightly. Continuous monitoring, proper supervision and strict compliance with all safety requirements are essential to prevent such tragic incidents from happening again,” he said in a statement today.
Wee also extended his condolences to the family of the worker who died following the incident.
He said MBKS was deeply saddened by the tragedy and that its thoughts were with the deceased’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.
Wee said the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and other relevant authorities were investigating the incident.
He said MBKS would not speculate on the cause of the incident and would await the outcome of the investigations before making further comments.
Wee also expressed hope that the investigations would be completed promptly so that appropriate measures could be introduced to further strengthen safety practices at construction sites.
