MIRI: Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) is reshaping how students get to grips with mathematics, with 90 students from SMK Lopeng Tengah benefiting from a mentors mathematics programme here recently.
The April 20 programme that blended exam readiness with game-based learning was led by Jameson Malang, Senior Teaching Fellow from Curtin Malaysia’s School of Pre-U and Continuing Education (SPACE).
It introduced interactive mathematics games alongside its established SPM-focused workshops.
For the first time, lower secondary students explored mathematics through high-energy activities such as ‘Memory Grid,’ ‘Quiz Headache,’ and ‘Math Escape.’
Supported by 25 Curtin student mentors, 40 Form Two and Three students worked in teams to tackle challenges designed to build critical thinking and collaboration, while changing perceptions of mathematics from difficult to enjoyable.
At the same time, 50 Form Four students took part in targeted small-group workshops focused on SPM-level questions, strengthening their understanding and exam confidence.
The newly introduced games initiative was driven by a student organising team led by Austin Jason Pui, with Irfa Safrina Rahmat and Resty James, reflecting Curtin Malaysia’s strong emphasis on student-led impact and leadership development.
Developed in close collaboration with SMK Lopeng Tengah’s academic staff, the programme highlighted Curtin Malaysia’s commitment to community engagement.
