KUCHING: Sarawak’s combat sports scene reached another milestone with the staging of the TYT Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Muaythai Cup and Borneo Cup 2026, featuring the inaugural Borneo Cup and reinforcing efforts to elevate the sport on both regional and global platforms.

The championship drew a total of 350 participants representing clubs from across Malaysia, alongside international entries from Indonesia, Brunei, the Philippines, Thailand and Singapore, underscoring its growing stature on the regional calendar.

Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Mayor, Datuk Hilmy Othman, said the introduction of the Borneo Cup marked a significant step forward in strengthening regional cooperation while expanding opportunities for high-level international competition.

“This initiative opens a new chapter in the development of combat sports in the region, while fostering closer ties among participating nations,” he said in his remarks at the opening of the event at Kuching Waterfront on Saturday (April 18).

He added that the strong turnout of athletes not only heightened the level of competition but also enhanced Kuching’s reputation as an emerging international sports destination.

Hilmy reaffirmed DBKU’s commitment to supporting sports development as a key platform for nurturing a healthy, disciplined and competitive society, in line with efforts to make Kuching a more active and liveable city.

“DBKU will continue to encourage community participation in sports and recreational activities, while supporting initiatives that promote a healthy lifestyle,” he said.

He also noted that the consistent organisation of such championships has brought positive economic impact to the state, contributing to tourism growth and local business activity.

“Events of this scale not only strengthen the development of muaythai in Sarawak but also serve as a catalyst for economic and tourism growth through the hosting of international-standard competitions,” he added.

Meanwhile, Sarawak State Muaythai Association (PMNS) President, Jumaat Ibrahim, was also present, with the championship continuing to play a key role in developing local talent and exposing athletes to international competition.

At the same event, the 2025 Sports Body Star Rating Certificate presentation was also held, which PMNS received a four-star rating.

The certificate was presented by Sarawak Regional Sports Commissioner, Azizi Johari, with PMNS represented by Jumaat.
