SIBU: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Patinggi Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has pledged to prioritise the development and infrastructure of rural areas in Sarawak, especially for projects approved by the federal government.

“I promise that as long as I am entrusted by the Prime Minister to oversee the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development, I will prioritise the development and infrastructure of rural areas in Sarawak.

“Moreover, Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) President (Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum) mentioned projects that have been approved but are slow to be implemented. I will bring this matter to the Public Works Department (JKR). I will frequently visit Sarawak to help expedite the implementation of these projects,” he stressed.

He made these remarks in his speech at the Pre-Gawai celebration organised by PRS at Kingwood Hotel here last night (May 18).

Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, added he acknowledges the rural residents’ great need for infrastructure, water projects, electricity, as well as community halls.

Earlier, Salang, in his speech, called on the Rural and Regional Development Ministry (KKDW) to expedite the implementation of approved development projects in the rural areas as soon as possible.

He said these projects, regardless of their size, would significantly improve the livelihoods of rural residents.

“PRS is the only political party that fights for the fate of the people in the rural areas; as such, we hope that the ministry will find ways to expedite the implementation of development projects that have been planned,” he said.

He said the leaders of PRS will hand over the application letters for development to Ahmad Zahid today (May 19).
